Hamoa
Beach - Beach Vacation Paradise
Hamoa Beach Park is located off Piilani
Highway about two and a half miles south of Hana. It received the late James
Michener's vote as the most beautiful beach in the Pacific paradise. Hamoa Beach
is a nice place for swimming and snorkeling in the summer and bodysurfing in the
winter
The black sand of Hamoa beach is one of our favorite beaches on Maui. The
water was not too rough, there are no rocks in the surf, the crowds are minimal,
and the scenery is amazing.
Hamoa beach is tucked away down a flight of
stairs from Haneo'o Road in Hana. The only parking is along the side of Haneo'o
Road. The Hotel Hana-Maui has facilities on this beach (even though the hotel is
fairly far away) and runs a shuttle bus for its guests.
The beach is a long strand of soft grey sand tucked between lava
rock outcroppings. Because the waves break right at the shore, it can be a
dangerous beach, especially during high surf. Body surfing and boogie boarding
can be difficult here due to the shorebreak.
Dr. Beach's 9th pick for "Best
Beaches in America" 2006 is another beautiful spot in Hawaii. Hamoa Beach is on
the west side of Maui near Hana, a less-developed part of this popular island.
Hamoa Beach has sea cliffs and lush vegetation; the public beach shares some
facilities with the Hotel Hana Maui. Offshore is a little island with coconut
trees. Hamoa Bay is not the most family-friendly place to swim: big surf and
strong currents can be dangerous, and the beach isn't lifeguarded. Summer and
early fall are the safest times of year.
Getting to Hamoa Beach
Hamoa Beach is approximately a five
to ten minute drive from the town of Hana. The drive is an easy one with lots of
great scenery on the way. There is no parking lot so you need to park on the
side of the road and take the steps down to the beach. Parking is generally not
a problem because the beach is never very crowded.
What's at the
Beach
There is a beach hut that rents body boards, snorkeling
equipment, and gives out towels to guests of the Hotel Hana Maui
<http://www.vacationidea.com/hotelhanamaui.html>. There are also
beach chairs and umbrellas that are for hotel guests only. Unless you are a
guest of the hotel and want a chair, the best spot on the beach is on a big
towel right on the black sand. There is also plenty of shade at the beach so you
won't have any trouble getting out of the sun when feel like you've had enough.
Facilities
Hamoa Beach has many facilities
available only to guests of the Hotel Hana, including lounge chairs, umbrellas,
and bathrooms. For the general public, the facilities are limited to:
-A
bathroom with toilets and sinks
-One outdoor shower
What's Nearby
The Hotel Hana-Maui runs hourly shuttle service for its guests
between Hamoa Beach and the hotel. Aside from that, there are only a few
honor-system fruit stands along the Haneo'o Road.

Hana area, Maui,
Hawaii. This lovely beach, found less than mile from Koki, is perfect for
swimming or snorkeling on the calm days, and good for bodysurfing on the windy.
As Hamoa is the semi-private beach of the Hotel Hana-Maui, it is
well-maintained, as shown by the paved, torchlit walkway leading to the beach.
Location :: A few minutes past Koki Beach on Hamoa Road.
Access :: Hamoa
Road.
Services :: Showers, restrooms, pavilion.
Notes :: The Hotel
Hana-Maui shuttles hotel guests to the beach every hour. If hob-nobbing with the
hotel crowd isn't your idea of fun, then be sure to get to Hamoa by mid-morning
and stay until the late afternoon.
Swimming in the Waves
The water at Hamoa is not very
rough and there are no rocks to cut you up when you swim. The waves can get
quite large but were easier to swim in then many of the other beaches on the
island. (Surf conditions on all beaches in Hawaii depend on the time of year
that your there.) Aside from some fish near the rocky outcroppings on either
side of the beach the snorkeling is not very good. In the afternoon you can
watch many local surfers catch waves just off the beach.
Hamoa Beach is open
24 hours a day. The Hotel Hana-Maui shuttle runs hourly from 10:00am to 4:00pm,
weather permitting.
Getting There
The stairs down to Hamoa
Beach
Hamoa Beach is on Haneo'o Road, which is about one mile beyond Hana
(towards the Pools at O'heo and Kaupo) on the Hana Highway. Turn left onto
Haneo'o Road and drive until you see a bunch of cars parked on the side of the
road. Of course, if no one is at the beach, you'll have to look more carefully
for the stairs or the small pavillion-like structure on the side of the road.
Park and walk down to the beach using the staircase.
